It is easy to mix up a Paint horse and a pinto mare due to their similar colouring but there is a distinction. Essentially, the only way to tell for sure is to consult the studbook; while pintos are only a colour breed, Paint horses are an official breed in their own right. Paint horses have Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse ancestry, which is where they get their breed-specific conformation.
